Plot summary
Leland Gaunt arrives in Castle Rock, Maine, and opens a store called Needful Things, where each resident finds an object of desire. He charges small amounts for the goods and asks each customer for a prank on a neighbor. Brian Rusk, a boy, receives a rare baseball card for throwing turkey muck onto sheets Wilma Jerzyck has hung out to dry, and Wilma blames her enemy Nettie Cobb. Sheriff Alan Pangborn has come to Castle Rock from the big city, looking for a quiet life. Boat salesman Danforth Keeton has taken twenty thousand dollars of the town tax money to cover his gambling debts, and Gaunt sells him a clockwork game that predicts horse races.
