Plot summary

Chimo is nineteen and lives with his mother in a poor Arab neighborhood of Marseille, where he spends his days with unemployed friends instead of using the writing talent his teachers notice. A place at a writers' school in Paris comes his way, and he passes it up. Then Lila moves into the neighborhood with her eccentric aunt, a blond sixteen-year-old who talks about sex without embarrassment and treats Chimo as her audience. When she challenges him to peek under her skirt while she swings, a tentative romance starts between them. Mouloud, Chimo's best friend and the leader of their group, has decided that Lila is his, and he will not leave her alone in the street. Chimo's disgust at how Mouloud treats her splits the two friends.
