Trailer

Plot summary

Anna Gardner is a British exchange student at a college in Los Angeles, where she meets Jacob Helm, an American student, and the two fall in love. When graduation arrives, Anna stays with Jacob for the summer rather than going back to the United Kingdom. Her student visa expired with her degree, so she has remained in the country past its terms. She returns to London for a family engagement, and when she flies back to Los Angeles, immigration officials detain her, deny her entry and deport her. Anna appeals, and is told she cannot enter the United States.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Like Crazy (2011)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Drake Doremus built Like Crazy out of the end of his own eight-year long-distance relationship with a woman who lived in London while he lived in Los Angeles, down to the visa trouble, a brief marriage, the trip to Santa Catalina Island and the gift of a bracelet.
  • There was no screenplay. Doremus and co-writer Ben York Jones, who had been through long-distance relationships of his own, handed the actors a 50-page outline that read like a short story, with scene objectives and emotional beats but almost no dialogue.
  • Felicity Jones won the part of Anna over actresses auditioned in Los Angeles and London by taping two rough scenes at Doremus's request after a phone call; her version of the wordless closing shower scene decided him.
  • Cinematographer John Guleserian shot the film on a Canon EOS 7D stills camera fitted with cinema lenses on a rig he built himself, choosing it because heavier cameras could not follow scenes the actors were making up as they went.
  • The crew peaked at about 20 people and shrank to three for a Santa Monica beach scene, where only Doremus, Guleserian and a boom operator stood with the actors; intimate scenes between Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin ran as improvised takes of up to 30 minutes.
  • The entire film cost $250,000, a figure that also had to cover the airfares of the cast and crew for a four-week shoot split between Los Angeles and London.
  • Less than a day after the film took the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, Paramount Vantage and Indian Paintbrush outbid Fox Searchlight, The Weinstein Company and Summit Entertainment with a $4 million minimum guarantee plus about $10 million in prints and advertising.
