Plot summary
Goddard Bolt runs Bolt Enterprises and cares little about other people's needs or the environment. He wants a slum in Los Angeles torn down, and his rival Vance Crasswell has an interest in the same property. The two men make a wager: Bolt must get by for thirty days in that slum with no money at all. An electronic anklet tracks his boundaries and forfeits the bet if he stays outside them more than thirty seconds, and he cannot tell anyone living there who he is. His mustache is shaved and his toupée taken before he is driven to the area and left. There he is befriended by Sailor and Fumes and meets Molly, a former Broadway dancer.
