Plot summary
Jesse Fisher, 35, works in admissions at a New York college and has lost his taste for his own life, so an invitation from Peter Hoberg, his old English professor, to a retirement dinner in Ohio reads as a return to the years he liked best. On campus he meets Zibby, a nineteen-year-old drama student, and the two fall into a correspondence of handwritten letters that draws them closer. A sixteen-year age difference sits between them, and Jesse keeps weighing what a relationship would mean. Peter, who is facing retirement, asks the dean to let him stay on. Jesse also crosses paths with Judith Fairfield, a romantics professor he has long admired, and with Nat and Dean, two students.
