Plot summary
The Leningrad Rock Club gives the city's rock musicians one of the few stages the state allows, and in the summer of 1981 it draws a crowd of them. Mike fronts one of its more popular older bands, and his partner Natasha stays close to him. Viktor, nineteen, is quiet and gifted with melody, with a strange way of turning a lyric. The musicians live frugally, their indulgences creative rather than material. Around the three move the players who pass in and out of their lives, while the club takes shape and Kino's first album is recorded. A narrator called Skeptic cuts in to recast the club as hedonistic and dangerous, and the music swings between stage performances and sudden music-video flights. Mike and the other rockers seize their moment to defy the bureaucrats and play to audiences.
