Plot summary
The group's concert career had stalled since early 1994, when a summer tour was canceled the day before it was to start. The acoustic series had requested an appearance for years, and the band had always declined, doubting that its heavy songs would hold up without amplifiers. It agreed at last, rehearsing in Seattle and then in New York with a second guitarist brought in. The taping took place at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Majestic Theater, a semicircular hall, on a stage dressed to look old and decrepit and lit by candles the singer had bought at a Seattle market. Thirteen songs were prepared, a setlist meant to satisfy both casual listeners and longtime fans.

- To match the gloomy mood of the music, the Unplugged art director had stagehands fire multiple gunshots into the Majestic Theater's walls to create cracks, and peeling paint was applied by hand.
- Jerry Cantrell performed the Unplugged concert with food poisoning from a hot dog, vomiting constantly, so a trash can was placed next to him on stage.
- The Unplugged taping ran over three hours because of camera, lighting and sound setup and repeated mistakes; "Got Me Wrong" was attempted four times.
- Layne Staley reviewed the finished Unplugged material, was unhappy with it, and did not want it released. He felt the recording invited stigmatization and drew undue attention to his addiction, and that segments implied he was sleepy and sluggish.
- Alice in Chains had not performed live since January 1994. The band had been set to join Metallica's tour starting in July 1994, but canceled all dates one day before it began because of frontman Layne Staley's heroin addiction.
- The Unplugged concert was Alice in Chains' first appearance as a five-piece band, with Heart guitarist Scott Olson joining as second guitarist.
- Cantrell wrote the song's opening riff and chorus more than a year earlier. Kinney proposed completing it right away so it could debut at the performance, and Cantrell finished it just hours before the show.
