Plot summary
Martin is a middle-aged philosophy teacher with no direction and no purpose. Long attached to platonic love and to celibacy, he meets Cécilia by chance: a young artist's model, an older adolescent, rumored to have killed her former lover, a painter, by the force of her sexual appetite. Martin finds her simplicity irritating, and she seems indifferent to nearly everything. He questions everything he lives, and she questions nothing at all. The two begin an affair that is erotic rather than intellectual, with an abyss between them. He wants to possess her, and her failure to respond to him torments him.
