In 1941, Nazi Germany invades the Soviet Union, and its troops besiege Leningrad. A group of foreign journalists is flown into the city for one day. One of them, Kate Davis, is believed dead and is left behind when the plane departs, alone in a city under attack. Nina Tsvetkova, a young and idealistic police officer, helps her. The two women work for their own survival and for the survival of the people around them as the siege closes in.
