Plot summary
Salma Zidane is a Palestinian widow who has lived for years off the lemon grove her family tended in the occupied West Bank. Her son lives in Washington, D.C., and her daughters have married, so she works the trees alone. Israel Navon, the defense minister, moves into a house on the Israeli side of the border, directly beside the grove. The Secret Service considers the orchard a danger to him and his wife, Mira, sets up a guard post and a fence, and secures an order to cut down the trees. The village elder Abu Kamal advises Salma to give in rather than fight. She refuses, and the young lawyer Ziad Daud agrees to handle her case against the state.
