Plot summary
Early in the 11th century, during the reign of Emperor Renzong, the Song dynasty is poorly governed: the emperor prefers his own pleasures to state affairs, and corruption spreads through his government. War rages at the borders, where the armies of the rival Western Xia state press in, and the clan of generals that has defended the Song for generations, the Yangs, has almost no men left. Yang Zongbao, the last of its fighting men, is in the field when the Imperial Grand Tutor Pang refuses to send the reinforcements he needs. Zongbao falls, and the clan's widows, led by his wife Mu Guiying, arm themselves and march out to take the men's place.
