Plot summary
Hung Hei-kwun is a rebel against the Qing government. He reaches his village to find government soldiers have destroyed it, and he escapes with his infant son, the only survivor. Years later, Hung and the boy, Man-ting, are short of money on the road. In the same village, Red Bean and her mother work a con, with Red Bean weeping over a mother who is only pretending to be dead, and the wealthy Ma Kai-sin falls for it. At Shaolin, monks tattoo pieces of a treasure map on the backs of five pupils and send them away, while government troops close in. Ma Kai-sin, having watched Hei-kwun fight, hires him as a bodyguard and takes the travelers to his mansion.
