Plot summary
Serafina is a pupil at a strict Catholic boarding school for orphaned girls in Italy during World War II. The other girls keep away from her, and the nuns, led by Mother Superior Fioralba, treat her without sympathy. On Christmas Eve the girls dress for the midnight Nativity scene, a night when villagers come and give donations in return for prayers. A wealthy woman who has been trying to get the girls' attention brings a large custard cake called zuppa inglese. She asks the nuns to pray for the man she loves, who is being unfaithful to her.
