Plot summary
Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio, is a painter considered brilliant, and he defies the church's rules on how religious subjects may be shown in art. In 1610, Pope Paul V learns how the artist works, taking prostitutes, thieves and vagabonds as the models for his canvases, and the Vatican's secret service is sent to look into him. Whether Caravaggio is pardoned from a death sentence for murdering a rival depends on what the inquiry reports. The work is led by an investigator called the Shadow, who sets out the vices and the virtues that stand side by side in the painter.
