Plot summary
Sam has just graduated from medical school and is beginning a psychiatry residency, while Alex is completing a genomics dissertation. The two are newly engaged and have come to Los Angeles planning to live in the empty house of Sam's mother, Jane. Their arrangement changes when they discover Jane is still living there. A free-spirited record producer, she is recording an album with Ian McKnight, her boyfriend, and his band, and the group seems to prefer parties to finishing the record. Jane unsettles Sam; the two hold very different views of how to live. Alex, meanwhile, is drawn to the people around Jane, spends more time with the band, and lets her dissertation wait.
