Plot summary
Katherine Newbury is a celebrated British comedienne who has hosted a US late-night talk show for years. Her ratings are falling, and she has to revamp the show or lose it. Katherine tells her producer, Brad, that her writing staff needs a woman. Molly Patel, a chemical plant worker and devoted fan of the show, is hired for a 13-week trial. She is briefed before meeting the writers, who treat her as an errand runner until Brad corrects them. At the next morning's writers' meeting, Katherine, who does not know most of them, assigns them numbers instead of names, and a late arrival is fired on the spot. Molly shares an office with Burditt, the show's most seasoned writer, and she has no professional comedy experience.
