Plot summary
Mamiya, Taguchi and Hirayama, three middle-aged friends, gather with Akiko Miwa and her daughter Ayako for the seventh anniversary of the death of Shuzo Miwa, a college friend. The men remark that Akiko, a widow, has stayed attractive in her forties, and they agree that Ayako, twenty-four, ought to take a husband. Taguchi mentions a possible suitor who is already engaged; Mamiya proposes Goto, a man who works for him. Ayako lives with Akiko, who teaches dressmaking, and tells her mother she does not want to marry.
