Plot summary
Minoru Hayashi and his younger brother Isamu share a home in a Tokyo housing complex with their parents and their aunt, where talk moves quickly between households. The boys and their friends Kôzô and Zennosuke watch sumo wrestling on the one television set in the complex, at a neighbor's house, and the brothers press their parents for a set of their own. Keitarô and Tamiko Hayashi refuse, citing the cost and their belief that television harms Japanese society. After a tantrum, their father tells the boys to be quiet, and Minoru complains that grown-ups spend their days on empty greetings such as good morning instead of saying what they mean. The brothers then go silent, refusing to speak to any adult, while the housewives of the complex are busy over monthly dues that have gone missing.
