Plot summary
On the Kyushu side of the Kanmon Straits, the Owada family is fighting the Kyoei Group over territory and drug smuggling. In June 1968, petty criminal Shuji Kuroda agrees to answer for the murder of Kyoei boss Iwao Masaki in place of Tetsuya Kusunoki, the boss's son-in-law, who is unable to carry out the killing himself. Kuroda serves seven years. In prison he drives off inmates attacking Katsuo Shimura and gains a friend. Shimura is waiting when Kuroda walks free, together with a young man who calls himself Akira Kobayashi; both want to become yakuza and pledge themselves to him. Back in Kyushu, Kuroda finds Kusunoki abandoned by the Owada family over his heroin addiction, and the family refuses to pay the five million yen Kuroda was promised.

- Screenwriter Koji Takada was brought in on the script at producer Goro Kusakabe's suggestion when director Kinji Fukasaku had despaired of Susumu Saji and Yozo Tanaka, who had given up and were relaxing, playing mahjong and drinking.
- Takada said Yozo Tanaka was recruited specifically to add strong female characters to the story, and that although he rewrote most of the script he left several "Tanaka-style" lines and scenes for Yuriko Hishimi.
