Plot summary
A woman is forced at gunpoint to hand her son Alessandro over to a man collecting debts. She turns to religion, marries a pastor, and trusts that God will help her find her son. The Sandro she meets is not that boy but another Sandro, Sandro do Nascimento, whose mother was murdered while he watched, which sent him to Rio de Janeiro to look for a better life. He lives near the Candelária Church and survives the 1993 massacre there. The story follows his brushes with the law, his romances, and the charity workers who try to help him in the favela. In 2000 he hijacks a bus in Jardim Botânico.
