Plot summary
João Francisco dos Santos, the son of slaves, has been a bandit, a street fighter, a brothel cook and a convict, and lives in Rio de Janeiro's bohemian Lapa district in 1932, aiming at the stage career he dreams of. He presides over a surrogate family of pariahs: Laurita, a prostitute raising a baby daughter the group dotes on; Tabu, a flamboyant hustler; Renatinho, a teenager who is João's lover; and Amador, who owns the Blue Danube club, which serves as their second home. Lapa is a world of pimps and prostitutes, and at the Blue Danube João begins to sing and performs as Madame Satã.
