Plot summary
Blake, a rock musician, leaves a rehab clinic and makes his way home through dense woods, swimming in a lake and sleeping outdoors. At his stone mansion he changes clothes and avoids the roommates living there, Scott, Luke, Asia and Nicole, who come to him for money and for help with a song. A record company calls about another tour. Donovan arrives with a private detective, and a record executive tries to take Blake away with her. He keeps out of sight and turns away a concerned friend.

- Gus Van Sant had contemplated the project for nearly a decade and once wanted to make a biographical film about Kurt Cobain, but decided against it out of fear of a lawsuit from Cobain's widow, Courtney Love.
- The film was shot in the Hudson Valley region of New York, but cinematographer Harris Savides' special treatment of the film stock made it suggest the Pacific Northwest, where Gus Van Sant is from.
- Director Matt Reeves has said that Gus Van Sant's Last Days was an influence on the character of Bruce Wayne in Reeves' 2022 film The Batman.
