Plot summary
In 1555, the Egyptian Act orders all Egyptians out of England, and anyone found helping them could be executed. Patience, a mute young woman, lives in an isolated community of salt farmers in rural England under David, her brother-in-law and its leader. His plans for the place have failed, and he keeps a tight hold on what remains. In exchange for a fee, he agrees that an Egyptian family may stay on the land for a month, until a ship carries them away. Patience is drawn to Rumi, the family's son, and that attachment sets her against David.
