Plot summary
Voula and her five-year-old brother Alexandros have never seen their father, and their mother tells them he is living in Germany. One day the two of them leave home without telling anyone and make for the Athens railway station, hoping to board the train to Germany. Caught without tickets, they are taken off and handed to a relative, who insists the story about their father is not true. A sudden blizzard gives the children the chance to slip away, and they set off on foot. On the road they meet Orestis, who drives for a traveling theater troupe and offers them a place in his bus.

- Theo Angelopoulos got the idea for Landscape in the Mist after reading a newspaper report about two children travelling to Germany in search of their father, struck by their strong desire to find him.
- Composer Eleni Karaindrou wanted the score to carry traces of Mendelssohn and Franck because the children reminded her of romantic escapes, and picked the oboe as the lead instrument because it is romantic and screams at the same time.
- Landscape in the Mist was the first film by director Theo Angelopoulos to be distributed in the United States.
