Plot summary
After the Russian Revolution, a band of refugees makes its way back to Greece and takes in an orphaned girl, Eleni, raising her as one of the household. She becomes the center of the story. Eleni grows up among them and in time marries Alexis, the family's musician son, who has been raised as her brother. The refugee family keeps moving, separating and coming together again, and its members remain in search of a homeland. Greece passes through one transformation after another while they live inside those changes, and the years the story covers run from 1919 through the Second World War and the Greek Civil War that comes after it.
