Plot summary
Years after the dead rose, the scattered remnants of humanity hold a chain of walled city-states across North America, one of them in downtown Pittsburgh. Rivers protect two sides and an electrified fence called the Throat closes the third, watched by a militia. The wealthy live in the high-rise Fiddler's Green while everyone else subsists in squalor, and Paul Kaufman, the city's plutocratic ruler, controls the commerce inside the zone. Riley Denbo designed Dead Reckoning, the armored vehicle whose crew crosses zombie country for food, medicine and luxury goods to barter. On a run, the crew sees zombies behaving with intelligence, among them Big Daddy, a former gas station attendant. Weary of the city, Riley retires from command and plans to leave for Canada once his car is repaired.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Land of the Dead (2005)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- George A. Romero walked away from 20th Century Fox over the title: the studio wanted Night of the Living Dead, he wanted Dead Reckoning, and when he queried the insistence he found Fox was after ownership of the franchise. Universal instead gave him $15-19 million, the largest budget of any of his Dead films.
- Asia Argento got the part of Slack through family history: Romero had worked with her father, Dario Argento, on films including Dawn of the Dead in 1978 and Two Evil Eyes in 1990.
- The goriest moments, such as a woman having her navel piercing torn out by a zombie, were shot once and then hidden behind foreground elements filmed on bluescreen, so the overlays could simply be lifted off for the unrated DVD. Elsewhere blood was digitally repainted blacker, or painted out altogether, to secure the R rating.
