Plot summary

Born in a village near Pathankot, Laal Singh Chaddha has legs that need braces, and his mother, Gurpreet Kaur Chaddha, raises him on the belief that he can do anything. She works as a maid so that he can attend a missionary school, where he meets Rupa D'Souza, the only friend he makes. Rupa pictures a glamorous life. When bullies chase him and break his leg braces, Laal finds he can run, fast enough to get him into Hindu College in Delhi. There Rupa turns to modeling, while Laal is swept up in demonstrations over the Mandal Commission and rioting around Babri Masjid. He then joins the Indian Army, as others in his family have, and befriends Balaraju Bodi, a fellow soldier with plans for an undergarment factory of his own.
