Plot summary
Korea, 1862. Famine and bad harvests have left the poor of the late Joseon dynasty starving while the aristocracy guards its own wealth. The Chusul clan, outlaws who rob corrupt officials and give what they take to the hungry, holds its cause above the lives of its members. Dol Mo-chi is a poor butcher. Jo Yoon, a young nobleman, offers him a hefty sum to kill a young woman, and Mo-chi cannot do it; he lets her go. The next night his house is set alight with him and his family locked inside. Mo-chi survives, confronts Jo Yoon, and is badly beaten. He is thrown in prison and sentenced to die that night.
