Plot summary
After Singapore falls in 1942, Australia has lost nearly an entire division taken prisoner, while its professional soldiers, the Australian Imperial Force, fight on in North Africa. The troops left at home are conscripts and militiamen, nicknamed chocos and thought unfit for combat, kept at menial work. Rushed north to New Guinea with minimal training, they set out from Port Moresby and cross the Owen Stanley Range on the only track, the Kokoda track. The 39th Battalion is the formation left to delay the Japanese until the AIF reaches them. One of its infantry sections, with the brothers Jack and Max Scholt among the men, is on forward patrol when a Japanese force attacks. Max, a recently promoted lance-corporal, takes charge of the survivors, who fall back into the dense jungle, cut off behind enemy lines.

- Kokoda was inspired by a real forward patrol led by Lieutenant Sword that was cut off from supply at the start of the Battle for Isurava. The men went days without food, carrying their wounded and suffering tropical diseases before emerging from the jungle near Alola.
- Budget restrictions forced director Alister Grierson and co-writer John Lonie to scale down the story of Kokoda, so they concentrated mainly on the trials of one lost patrol instead of the wider campaign.
