Plot summary
Kodi's father Murugan, a low-rung Democratic party worker in Pollachi, brings him into politics and then sets himself on fire over a factory whose mercury waste is poisoning the locality. Kodi grows up in the party beside his friend Bhagat Singh and loves Rudra, a politician in the ruling Republican party. His identical twin Anbu teaches engineering and keeps away from politics. Kodi becomes the party's district youth wing organizer despite the objections of the ex-minister Marimuthu. Malathi, who sells eggs, chases Kodi after he wrecks her trolley; at a college cafeteria she meets Anbu, takes him for his brother, and falls for him. She describes how the factory's waste blights her village, and Anbu carries the news to Kodi.
