Plot summary
Balam's father rules a Mayan city-state whose warriors fight with wooden swords edged in obsidian. Rivals armed with metal blades cut him down in battle, and Balam inherits the throne. His advisers, the head priest among them, urge him to take the people out of the Yucatán and across the Gulf of Mexico to rebuild their strength. At a coastal settlement where many boats are kept, Balam invites the people there to join the crossing; their chief agrees on the condition that Balam wed Ixchel, his daughter, and crown her. Balam accepts. The land on the far side of the Gulf is held by Black Eagle's Native American tribe, which resents the arrivals. When a raid to seize a Mayan goes wrong, Black Eagle is wounded and carried back to the Mayan settlement, where Ixchel treats his injuries.

- Anthony Quinn was originally named as Yul Brynner's co-star in Kings of the Sun, but George Chakiris, who had co-starred with Brynner in Flight from Ashiya, re-teamed with him on the film instead.
- Elliott Arnold wrote the original screenplay for Kings of the Sun, but Walter Mirisch was unhappy with it and got James Webb to write a new draft.
- Kings of the Sun began when Arnold Picker of United Artists read an article about Mound builders of Mexico, and Walter Mirisch commissioned a treatment from Elliott Arnold theorising that the Mayans fled to present-day Texas and exchanged technology with local Indians.
