Plot summary
Dr. Carole Nelson and her husband Niles, both physicians, save a wounded gangster's life. The patient's boss, Joe Gurney, pays Niles and urges him to move his practice to a richer part of town. Niles takes the advice, neglects his practice to bet on horses, and treats Gurney's men without telling his wife. Carole follows him one night to the gang's hideout, police raid it, and Niles is killed in the shooting. She is charged anyway, and when the trial ends in a hung jury her medical license is still at risk unless she proves her innocence within three months. She and her Aunt Josephine move to Wayne Center, where two of Gurney's men are jailed, hoping to reach him.
