Plot summary
Arnold Rothstein builds a reputation as an expert gambler in 1920s New York City, and mob boss Big Tim O'Brien gives him a job in his illegal enterprises. Rothstein grows rich by methods that are often ruthless: he maneuvers his business partner Jim Kelly, an unreliable alcoholic, into giving up his half of their arrangement. He has a lifelong friend in Johnny Burke and a lasting enemy in Phil Butler, a corrupt police detective. With little time for a private life, he impulsively marries Carolyn Green, an actress, and then largely neglects the marriage. His obsessions are a big bankroll and one day winning a poker hand with a royal flush. The couple spend their first day of married life at the racetrack, where the groom gives his attention to everyone but his wife.
