Plot summary
Amygdala's Kimi smart speaker relies on human monitors to improve its search algorithm, and Angela Childs is one of them, working from her Seattle apartment. Agoraphobia, worsened by the pandemic, keeps her inside. Her main visitor is Terry, her partner from across the street. Reviewing a data stream, she hears what sounds like a violent crime. She asks her coworker Darius for help identifying the account, then reports what she heard to her superior, who refers her to the executive Natalie Chowdhury. Amygdala's response is bureaucratic and reluctant, with no hurry to bring in the authorities. Pursuing the case would take her outside, into streets where demonstrators have gathered over a new law on homeless residents.
