Plot summary
Alice is a young American living in London with a steady job and a boyfriend. A chance meeting with a stranger leads her to seek him out, and she learns he is Adam, a mountain climber celebrated for saving six people in an accident that killed others. She ends her old relationship for him, though a friend questions how quickly it has moved. When a mugger takes her bag on the street, Adam beats the man badly and then asks her to marry him. They honeymoon at a remote cabin. Back home, anonymous letters and phone calls trouble her, and she wonders how much she really knows about the man she married.
