Plot summary
Nate Norman, a high school dropout, lives in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where his mother works several jobs to raise him and his younger brother. He and his best friend Topher Clark, twenty-seven, smoke marijuana and resent scraping by in a city of wealth. Delivering pizza, Nate meets a rich man who made a fortune transporting high-grade marijuana from Canada into the state. Nate studies Canadian marijuana law, which is looser than at home, and decides to try smuggling with Topher. SPOILER
Kid Cannabis was inspired by Mark Binelli's 2005 Rolling Stone article about the real Nate Norman, an overweight high-school dropout and pizza delivery man in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, who built a multimillion-dollar marijuana smuggling business from Canada. He was caught, sentenced to 12 years in prison, released early, and now lives in Coeur d'Alene again.- Some scenes were shot inside a marijuana-growing facility in Canada, and the crew was driven there in a van with blacked-out windows.
