Plot summary
In New York, the American Museum of Natural History holds the J.P. Morgan jewel collection behind poor security. The display contains 22 precious gems, among them the Star of India, a sapphire of 563.35 carats, the 100.32-carat de Long Ruby, and the 16.25-carat Eagle Diamond. Every stone is famous, and fame of that kind would make the gems almost impossible to sell. Jack Murphy, whose nickname is Murph the Surf, and Allan Kuhn are Miami playboys who have turned con men. In 1964 the two take the collection from the museum, a crime called the Greatest Jewel Heist of the 20th Century.
