Plot summary
Ulysses Pick's gang shoots its way into the house he once shared with his wife Hyacinth and their four children, bringing a hostage and the stuffed wolverine Crispy. Police have surrounded the place, and Big Ed, the gang's second in command, orders the dead among them out. The ghost of Calypso, Hyacinth's father, narrates that a house keeps its sorrow after its people leave. Ulysses arrives carrying Denny, a drowned young woman who can stand and hear his thoughts. Hyacinth remains in the house's upper bedroom.
