Plot summary

Kedibone Manamela finishes secondary school in Orlando East, Soweto, with plans to study at a city university. The aunt she lives with, Magauti, would rather she take a job at the supermarket where she works; the money saved for tuition has gone into a Ponzi scheme called Hope of Glory. Her longtime boyfriend Mrembula sells a vintage car he inherited from his late father, bringing in 25,000 rand toward her fees, and Kedibone lends 5,000 rand to her pregnant best friend Geminah, who also intends to start university. On campus the two cannot get accommodation and take a dilapidated room offered by an acting professor. Kedibone meets popular students including Tanya and takes jobs that lead her into parties and drug use while Mrembula works in Soweto.
