Plot summary

The island of Perumaachi, near the southern Indian subcontinent, comes under Roman attack in 1070. A local man named Koduvan helps the soldiers kill a hundred of its warriors, and the survivor Selumaara carries word to the chieftain Senthee. Senthee's son Kanguva executes Koduvan before the tribe, and Koduvan's widow Aeral entrusts their son Poruva to Kanga. The Romans then ally with Udhiran, chieftain of the neighboring island Arathi. In 2024, Zeta breaks out of a Russian biomedical facility whose commander sends troops after him. In Goa, bounty hunter Francis Theodore and his friend Colt 95 apprehend criminals for the police, while his ex-girlfriend Angela and her partner Accelerator work as rival bounty hunters. Zeta follows Francis, and after the boy suffers a seizure, Francis takes him to a hospital.

While filming a fight sequence in late November 2023, Suriya was hit on the shoulder by a falling rope camera. He took two weeks off to recover, briefly halting production, and was back on set by mid-December.
Suriya was reportedly set to appear in 13 different looks in Kanguva, breaking the record of his earlier film Ayan (2009), in which he was seen in ten.
After criticism that Kanguva's sound mixing was loud and jarring, producer Gnanavel Raja said the issue would be fixed and cinemas were asked to cut the volume by two points. Nearly 12 minutes were then trimmed and the film was re-censored with improved sound mixing, playing from 19 November.
On 12 November 2024, Madras High Court Justices C. V. Karthikeyan and G. Jayachandran issued a restraining order against Kanguva, citing non-payment of dues.
Producer Gnanavel Raja said Suriya's voice would be enhanced with artificial intelligence for the film's dubbing into multiple languages.
Hindi actor Bobby Deol joined Kanguva as its main antagonist, his Tamil debut, in July 2023, signing on before his comeback hit Animal (2023) came out. He called the part out of his comfort zone, as he had to learn Tamil fluently within two months.
Pictures and footage from Kanguva's sets were leaked and went viral, prompting the studio Studio Green to warn of legal action against those responsible.
After Kanguva's negative reception, the Tamil Film Active Producers' Association urged that public reviews of films on YouTube be restrained because they hurt Tamil films' box-office performance. In December 2024 it filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court, which was dismissed, the court holding it had no right to curtail freedom of expression.
