Plot summary
The documentary traces Judy Blume's life and career, from her New Jersey upbringing to her years as a suburban housewife and her rise as a leading author of young adult fiction. Blume speaks in new interviews, alongside clips from past talk show appearances and archival photographs. Actors, a comedian, authors and her two children describe what her work meant to them, and adult women recall the letters they exchanged with her when they were teenagers. The film sets that readership against the critical battles her books provoked over book banning and censorship, and against the wider question of free speech in the United States.
