Plot summary
At a charity event in County Kerry held in memory of his mother Rita, twelve-year-old Mully sees his father, James, take the donated hospice money to cover his debts. He seizes the cash and drives off in a taxi left unattended, finding Joy, a solicitor who is drunk and upset, with her newborn. The baby's crying makes Joy panic, and Mully calms the child. They abandon the taxi and take a car from a used-car lot, keeping to back roads with Mully at the wheel though he is underage and unlicensed. Joy never expected to be pregnant and plans to leave the baby with her friend Mags.
