Plot summary
Mary Meadows works as a substitute first-grade teacher, taking long walks through her suburban neighborhood in floral clothing, gloves and tap-dancing shoes, and driving a 1956 Nash Metropolitan. She speaks in a childlike, innocent manner and lives alone, calling her mother to talk over her day. She also carries a pistol in her purse and kills local thugs who accost her or commit crimes in her sight. A local sheriff investigating the vigilante killings meets her and is drawn to her old-fashioned dress and speech. An ex-convict named Skylar, who served time for child abuse, hangs around the school, and Miss Meadows warns him to stay away from her students.
