Plot summary
Billy McGregor lives in the countryside and counts three kangaroos as his best friends: Kim, Wal and their joey, Joey. The Dixon family hunt kangaroos on the land nearby, and the catcher they hire shoots the mob and drives the animals to Kangaroo Kingdom, an illegal kangaroo boxing place in Sydney. Joey escapes the ambush. Billy hears him whining nearby and grabs him, though Mick warns that his mother, Penny, will not like it. Billy takes money from a Save the Animals container to buy a ticket and boards a midnight train to Sydney, hiding Joey inside his jacket because a rule bars taking kangaroos on a train. There Linda Ross, the daughter of the American ambassador Ted Ross, is holding Joey, and Billy demands him back.
