Plot summary
Corporal Evan Albright joins the Marine Corps Security Guards hoping to save the world and to see action. His first assignment is protection duty at a U.S. Embassy in a seemingly safe Middle Eastern capital, and the unit spends its shifts holding back the protesters who gather outside the compound and keeping its marksmanship sharp with video games. The Marines are caught off guard when a group of well-armed, well-trained militants launches a surprise attack on the embassy, aiming to kill an informant inside the building. Outgunned, Albright and the other Marines have to muster the courage and the firepower they have.

- War veteran and writer Joel Turnipseed said parts of Jarhead's plot were taken from his 2002 memoir Baghdad Express: A Gulf War Memoir without his consent, as reported by David Carr in a November 2005 New York Times article. Screenwriter William Broyles Jr. said the sameness came from the retelling of common Marine experiences.
