Plot summary
Charlie Hudson, who quit the police force six months ago, is engaged to Claire Parker. Anna Penn teaches fourth grade and plans to marry David Allen. Both Claire and David are away in Europe for work, so Charlie and Anna come separately to The Plaza in Manhattan to start on their wedding arrangements. A chance meeting at the reception leads to another ride in the elevator, and their paths keep crossing, including a session registering gifts at the same wedding shop. Charlie asks Anna to dinner, where she describes her class and he talks about leaving the police. Henry Taylor, Charlie's former partner, gets to know Anna's friend Tracey Meltempi in a bar, and Tracey pushes Anna toward Charlie.
