Plot summary
The island's people have followed the voodoo rites of a priest named Damballah for years, and the local officials have left them alone. Captain Pierre Labiche arrives from the mainland to end the lawlessness and to clean up an ineffectual police force that drinks heavily. He asks Karl van Molder for help. Van Molder is a plantation owner who holds nearly half the island and great influence over its people. His life's work is parapsychology, and he believes in hidden powers of the mind. He cautions Labiche to leave the island's old ways alone. Van Molder's niece Annabella is visiting, a campaigner for the International Anti-Saloon League who hopes her uncle will fund it. She falls in love with Lieutenant Andrew Wilhelm. Island women are being turned into zombies, and a snake dancer named Kalea figures in the rites.
