Plot summary
In 1942, ten-year-old Timmy Reston is scolded for a jigsaw puzzle showing a nude woman. His mother tells him to throw it away; he returns with an axe and kills her, then dismembers her with a hacksaw. Police find him hiding in a closet, and he is sent to his aunt. Forty years later, a figure in black opens a box holding a bloodstained dress and the old puzzle, and begins assembling it. A student studying on the campus lawn in Boston is killed with a chainsaw, and her head is taken. Lt. Bracken and Sgt. Holden take the case. Bracken brings in Mary Riggs, a former tennis pro, to go undercover as an instructor on the campus tennis courts, with student Kendall helping her.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Pieces (1982)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Pieces is set in Boston, but director Juan Piquer Simón shot it at the Complutense University of Madrid and in Valencia, Spain. The film's American exteriors were not Boston either: they were shots reused from Simón's Supersonic Man (1979), which was filmed in New York City.
- Simón said he was proud of the visual effects in Pieces, especially the effect of a chainsaw cutting through a young woman's stomach, which was done with a pig carcass, along with the slaughterhouse guts used.
- None of the female stars of Pieces knew how to play tennis, even though they were playing professional players, so director Juan Piquer Simón hired a tennis coach so they could learn to lob the ball convincingly, he said in an interview on the film's 2008 DVD.
- Pieces was seized and confiscated in the UK under Section 3 of the Obscene Publications Act 1959 during the video nasty controversy, although it was not prosecuted for obscenity.
