Plot summary

Along the English-Scottish border, the de Vesci family struggles against Scot raiders. When raiders kill the chieftain's son, a blood feud begins. Gilbert, the wounded head of the family, turns to his nephew for help, sending his son Hubert to find him. The man he seeks, Guy de Lusignan, once served as a squire at Rochester and has since taken up mercenary work and underground bloodsports. He ignores the appeal to kinship and asks payment for himself and his partner Berenger, which costs Hubert what remains of the family fortune. A bribe spares a condemned murderer known as Crazy Mary, and Pierrepoint, an executioner wanted for selling prisoners, joins the group. Hubert brings the band back to the castle under siege.
