Plot summary
Zishe Breitbart grows up in a rural Polish shtetl, where his father is an Orthodox Jewish blacksmith. Hard labor has made him immensely strong. A talent agent who witnesses his strength persuades him to leave home for Berlin and work as a strongman. In Berlin, Erik Jan Hanussen, who presents himself as a mystic, runs a cabaret variety show. He puts a blonde wig and a Nordic helmet on Breitbart and bills him as Siegfried, a figure of Aryan physical superiority. The cabaret's largely Nazi clientele make the act a hit. Marta, a stage musician, shares the bill, and Hanussen treats her badly. Leading Nazis are among the audience.
